It tends to be worse the more money is involved, so in the superstar DJ/business techno/EDM scenes racism and sexism are more noticeable, but it’s actually everywhere. There is a lot of abuse and assault and discrimination going on behind the scenes and even at parties and clubs that market themselves as progressive (like De School in Amsterdam). There are definitely spaces and places that are much safer than others but just because a venue or festival has few female and/or Black DJs on the bill, doesn’t make it an automatically safe space for all the other women, trans and non-binary people and people of colour attending.
